    Echelon is a French word, which literally translates to "Rung of a ladder".

    However, in cycling terminology it's something completely different as Dan Lloyd explains.

    An echelon is a small group of riders in one line than span diagonally across the road.

    They are seen when crosswinds are strong and a team wants to split the peloton into multiple groups to have an advantage.
